A little mid-week getaway

The first week of November is a busy week for us. It is our anniversary and my birthday as well as the beginning of the long holiday season. So, we normally try to get away somewhere during this week. This year Tammy decided, since she has never been, we should go to Washington DC. We flew out on Tuesday morning and flew back on Thursday evening. We stayed in Kansas City Thursday night ot hit the casino, where we promptly lost our allocated gambling funds. (oh well we had fun). Here are a few of my favorite pictures from the trip.

Onaga vs Burlingame

Today I was day 2 in a row that I was able to get the big lens out.. It has been 2 years (thanks COVID), since I have been on the sideline for a high school football game, and this JV 8 mand game was great to get a little back in the groove. I felt like was a little behind and little out of position the whole game. Not sure if that was because the speed of the game was different than what I am used to, or just out of practice.

Capital City Monarchs Golf Fundraiser

Got to get the Camera out today and take some pictures at a golf fundraiser. The tournament was at Wabaunsee Pines Golf Course. (http://www.wabaunseepinesgolf.com/). The fundraiser was for the Capital City Monarchs a competitive baseball team out of Topeka Kansas. (https://twitter.com/citymonarchs?s=21)

It was a beautiful Sunday morning tournament, and the foursome of Connor,Jackson, Ben and Graham let me tag along with them. After not having the big lenses in my hand in a long time, I was happy with the results.

Here is a GoPro video as well, as I attempt to hop into video as well.

Chase County State Fishing Lake

No waterfall as desired, but a beautiful lake nonetheless.

I have lived in Kansas my whole life and am enamored with the beauty of the Flint Hills. Through my travels and work, I have heard it all. Kansas is flat. How boring. It’s all the same. That is SOOO not true. There are pockets of extreme beauty all around the state. And, I think the flowing grass in the plains is absolutely gorgeous. Plus, there are the most serene spots all over. The state of Kansas has done a fantastic job of creating lake parks throughout the state. In most (if not all) they have made a fishing lake for the residents to enjoy. I have a goal of bringing these lakes for all to see.

Yesterday, I made a trek to Chase County, near Cottonwood Falls. I have read and seen a couple of videos of a beautiful waterfall that feeds the Chase County lake. It’s a smaller lake, but it does allow camping, has a boat dock, and outlets into the water for fishing. It is located only a few miles outside of town and maybe 10 minutes off of Highway 50. VERY easy to get to. Google maps will say you have a lot of walking to get there, but that is not true. Here is a quick little video of the lake:

As you will see there is no footage of the waterfall. Remember, Kansas weather is tricky, and at this time, there was no water to feed the falls… Maybe next time.

Dry creek bed to feed the watrefall.

Follow along as I create a tour of Kansas through the eyes of a drone.

Labor Day Weekend

Spent the weekend at Milford Lake near Junction City, Kansas. It was our first time at this spot. We were joined by Cody, Kelly and Brayden at the adjoining camp site.

We had a great time out on the lake

Saturday was a camp day, just hanging around the camp. We cooked, got fully set up and added an out door TV to the set up.

Outdoor TV was the newest addition to the camp
setup.
Tucker loved the TV

Saturday night was shrimp boil night (or as my mom calls it, Frogmore Stew). Cody was the lead cook with lots of shrimp, potatoes, and corn. A fantastic way to end the first full day of the weekend.

Cody turning Cajun and stirring the shrimp boil.

We spent a lot of time with friends who stayed at the next cove over at primitive sites. Thank you to Taylor and Caylee for taking us out for the day on your boat! What a group! Spent Sunday on the water at Nudie beach (not a nude beach…lol), and having a few too many adult beverages.

Nudie Beach the the Meetup spot at Melvern Lake

Sunday, Tammy and Kelly had to work, so it was just us boys hanging out, cleaning up and packing up. What a great weekend and we will definitely enjoy back to Melvern Lake.

Fire Season in the flinthills

The wind in Kansas has made things difficult to get out and do the type of photography that I like to do. However this past Sunday I was able to get out and use the drone to show a little bit of the annual burn off in the Flinthills. This video was taken at dusk from a safe distance away, but you can see the beauty in the fire. In a few days these fields will be filled back in with green thick grass for livestock.
